Short answer: hydraulic oils cross-reference by ISO viscosity grade and additive type, not by brand name. An AW46 from one refiner does the same job as an AW46 from another when both meet the same spec. Match the grade and the anti-wear rating and the brand on the drum is a purchasing decision, not an engineering one.

HOW THE CHART WORKS

Find the ISO grade on the current product’s label, then match grade and type. The common equivalents: Mobil DTE 24, 25 and 26 cross to ISO 32, 46 and 68 anti-wear hydraulic oil. Shell Tellus S2 MX 32, 46 and 68 line up the same way. So does Chevron Rando HD 32, 46 and 68. Same grade, same anti-wear type, same job.

WHAT HAS TO MATCH

Three things: ISO viscosity grade, anti-wear additive type (AW), and any spec the machine maker calls out – Denison, Eaton, Cincinnati Machine and similar approvals. When those line up, switching brands is routine. When the label shows something unusual – a multigrade, a detergent type, a fire-resistant fluid – do not cross it by eye.
